Webinar: Navigating the Corporate Transparency Act, the new federal legislation very few know about
Originally recorded on Thursday, October 24, 2024

Existing non-exempt domestic and foreign reporting companies formed before January 1, 2024, will have one year (until January 1, 2025) to file their initial BOIRs. Are you notifying your clients about this new federal legislation? What are you doing to help your clients comply?”

NFPA Webinar: Innovation and Access to Justice: The Role of Regulatory Reform (05/20/2022)
Presented by: Zacharia DeMeola
The exploration of regulatory reform to open innovative new ways of providing people with information, tools, and solutions for their legal problems is now gaining traction across the country and continent, especially in states like Utah, Arizona, California,
North Carolina, Michigan and in many Canadian Provinces. Proposals for reform include allowing paraprofessionals to independently provide discrete legal services, removing obstacles for lawyers to partner with other professionals, and creating statewide
pilots – regulatory “sandboxes” - to explore new business models free from the restraint of current regulations. This reform movement has fueled debates around the role of lawyers as sole providers of legal services, whether these proposals can lead
to more innovation and address the access to justice crisis, and how data can be used to create effective policy. This program will discuss the underlying reasons for regulatory changes, who is driving those changes, the connection between reforms,
innovation, and access to justice, a survey of what reforms have already been implemented and what we have learned so far, and how paralegals might work together to advance these innovations.

Presented by Members of the NFPA Diversity, Inclusion & Equity Committee: Sybil Taylor Aytch, M.Ed., RP®, Aaron Bath, CEDS, RP®, Brenna Dickey, RP®, Sonjanita Coleman Jordan, Stefanie Trujillo, Jay M. Williams, TBLS-BCP
Stress has a deleterious effect on both one's physical and mental well-being. Discrimination has equally injurious health consequences. While it has long been recognized that stress can lead to a plethora of ailments, discrimination is equally as
damaging to one's health. Stress coupled with continuous discrimination leads to chronic illnesses, worse health outcomes, and shortened life spans. It is important to recognize that health vulnerability is related to stress which can
be exacerbated by the discrimination that marginalized populations routinely experience.
Topics to be examined include: the manifestation of stress in the workplace; the impact of stress on health outcomes; the stressors of marginalized populations;
the correlation between continuous discrimination and health issues; the effects of medical discrimination.

NFPA Webinar: Practical Asset Valuation Tips in Probate and Trust Administrations (8/19/2020)
Speaker: Angela M. Gonzalez
Paralegals are at the forefront of valuing assets in post-death trust and probate administrations. Issues
arise if we incorrectly value an asset, or are unaware of the questions we should ask our attorneys and accountants and clients when it comes to obtaining values for certain assets. This is especially true for estates that file a federal estate tax
return for portability. We will discuss valuing assets for "regular" and “portability” estates, what questions to ask, and strategies for discussing these assets with your attorneys and accountants. We will not discuss portability tax returns themselves.
Learning Objectives:
1) Regular asset valuations vs portability valuations
2) Difficult assets to value: Closely-held business valuations
3) Difficult assets to value: Digital assets, unclaimed property, personal property, and more
4) Samples of inventory summaries based on specific administration.

Recognizing and Interrupting Microaggressions
Presented by Stephanie Trujillo
Originally recorded on October 6, 2023
This presentation will explore microaggressions and how to recognize and interrupt them. Words and phrases have an impact whether you “mean” it or not. Many parts of the English language are rooted in racism, sexism, ageism, and other forms of discrimination, all of which must be unlearned. Generally, we all should become more aware of microaggressions, but there should be special attention to and awareness in professional settings. Creating a more inclusive and culturally competent workplace means that each of us has to explore our own unconscious bias in order to become more aware. Leadership must also correct the various types of workplace microaggressions (behavioral, environmental, and verbal) that occur and be very intentional about shifting the workplace culture.

NFPA Webinar: Navigating the Jurisdictional Maze in Indian Country (05/20/2022)
Presented by: Mary Kunesh, Minnesota State Senator
American Indians and Alaska Natives experience rates of violence much higher per capita than those of the general population. One in three American Indian (AI) women are raped in their lifetime and aggravated assault against AI is roughly twice that of
the country as a whole. Jurisdictional confusion and public safety complication on tribal lands contribute to these unacceptable rates of violence and are the result of decades of gross underfunding for tribal criminal justice systems and centuries-old
neglect of the federal government to fulfill its public safety obligations in Indian country. As a result, federal law has complicated tribal governments’ administration of justice, resulting in the historical pandemic of violence, now known as the
Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women movement. This presentation will lay out the historical results of colonization that bring us to current day efforts by legislators to Address Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives.

In particular, we'll discuss the critical effect of settlement language, and the use of solutions (e.g., trusts, structured settlements, etc.) on what plaintiffs keep after fees, taxes, and liens).
