Many legal practitioners do not possess an educational or formal practical background in the field of medicine or long-term care. They are, however, often faced with having to analyze medical records when preparing for a legal proceeding (deposition, hearing, or trial) to advance a claim or defense involving a party’s medical condition. Further, the legal practitioner must wade through voluminous records that do not appear to be in any logical order and contain terms and abbreviations akin to a foreign language. This presentation will help the practitioner to: understand the existence of different practices in the medical and long-term care realms; recognize the structural organization of the various provider’s records; become acquainted with the various terms used
by the providers and the definitions of the same; and how to utilize the record to support the legal claims or defenses advanced by the client.
