Are you interested in learning about becoming a Legal Paraprofessional (LP)? Do you need training in the new practice areas? Do you want to know what current Legal Paraprofessionals do? If you answered yes to any of these questions, please join us on June 3 for an informational discussion about being a Minnesota Legal Paraprofessional.
In January of this year, the Minnesota Supreme Court made the Legal Paraprofessional Program permanent and MPA would like to support LPs and encourage more individuals to apply.
LPs in Minnesota are approved for the following practice areas: tenant housing disputes; family law proceedings; expungement of criminal records; conciliation court; debtors in consumer debt and student loan cases; petty misdemeanor cases; judicial or administrative proceedings in probate and estate administration cases with some limitations; Office of Administrative hearings related to denial of license or certifications; Department of Employment and Economic Development related to denial of unemployment benefits; and Department of Human Services related denial of benefits.
Legal Paraprofessionals will be required to complete 10 hours of continuing legal education every two years including two courses on ethics in order to maintain their licensure. This program will be administered by the Program Committee for Legal Paraprofessionals. For more information about the program, please see the website.
