Association Spotlight - New Haven County Association of Paralegals, Inc.

New Haven County Association of Paralegals, Inc. (NHCAP) is a voluntary, non-profit professional association formed in 1980 and incorporated in Connecticut in 1994 serving the greater New Haven County area.

Our Mission is to promote the common business interests of persons engaged in the paralegal profession through offering continuing legal education to paralegals; evaluating and defining the paralegal roles in various sectors delivering legal services and educating both employers and consumers to these roles; maintaining mutually beneficial working relationships with local, state and national bar associations and other paralegal associations; and maintaining academic relationships with state-accredited educational institutions offering legal education programs and/or continuing legal education courses for paralegals.

For more than 25 years we assisted in organizing Paralegal Day a celebration of the paralegal profession. The event is presented by the Connecticut Alliance of Paralegal Associations, a coalition of the two Connecticut NFPA affiliated paralegal associations; Central Connecticut Paralegal Association and New Haven County Association of Paralegals. The half-day event provides the opportunity for paralegals throughout the state to come together and participate in continuing legal education, an exhibitor fair, a charity drive, and networking.  The Connecticut State Police has been the biggest recipient of our charity drive over the years with funds raised to purchase canine officers, protective vests for the K9 officers, car seats, and teddy bears for each mobile unit to be used in situations involving young children. Additional charity recipients have been a woman’s shelter, Statewide Legal Services, Dress for Success, local food banks and legalmen. Several years ago the Alliance began awarding Paralegal of the Year at Paralegal Day. The recipient must be employed as a paralegal performing substantive legal work and have made a difference to the legal profession.

Membership has participated in pro bono activities with Statewide Legal Services in assisting the agency with client intake and follow-up interviews, and with the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center in assisting with intake information and military record reviews. For the past five years our team, Paralegals Partner in Pink, has participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and for the past two years in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Both organizations honor breast cancer survivors, raise awareness about prevention, support patients, and funding and conducting research. Additionally, for the past several years the Association has supported the Toy Closet Program at Yale New Haven Hospital in their efforts to provide pediatric patients with an age-appropriate toy or small gift upon discharge from the hospital.

Members of the Association serve on the Legal Studies Program Advisory Committee of the University of New Haven and additionally have worked with the paralegal programs at Naugatuck Community College and Branford Hall. We have had the pleasure of mentoring many students from these programs.
