What are the highlights of the organization's past?

  • Involvement with the Hawaii Access to Justice Commission, its Education, Barriers, and Initiatives committees, and the Task Force on Adjunct Providers.
  • Continuous involvement with the Hawaii Children’s Justice Center. HPA members help abuse and neglected children by providing sleepwear, snacks and beverages, toiletries, clothing and gift cards.
  • 9/11 Day Observance: HPA members wrote thank you cards to local first responders to promote greater unity, compassion, peace and recognition to those who serve the community by risking their lives.

What fundraising efforts does your organization undertake?

  • Non-member dues income from full and half day education seminars. The funds collected help HPA offer free lunch hour seminars throughout the year and other sponsored events.
  • In the past we have also raised funds by selling chili, frozen cookie tickets from popular local restaurants.

What pro bono efforts does your organization undertake?

  • Young Lawyers Division: Paralegals assist with the Legal Line Hotline held in the evening hours on a weekday. HPA members handle intake and provide administrative support.
  • We also help support organizations by informing our members of volunteer opportunities at the Legal Aide Society of Hawaii, Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii, Guardian Ad Litem Programs,  and the Court-Appointed Special Advocates Program

What types of scholarships does your organization offer its members?

  • 2 - $500 scholarships + one year free HPA student membership

How do you attract and/or increase membership?

  • Discounted student membership rates
  • Free CLE seminars
  • Pau Hana events (after work socials)
  • Education conference discounts for local members
  • General Membership Meetings with free lunches
  • Obtaining more membership benefits such as discounts with AAA, discounts at local/downtown area eateries and other vendors

What are the top 3 events your organization has each year?

  • Fall Education Conference
  • Holiday party
  • Pau Hana events (after work social) sponsored by HPA with free food and drinks.

What types of companies sponsor your organization?

  • Professional Image: printing, copying and graphic solutions
  • Aloha Data: Data management, business process management, information repository company
  • Honolulu Information Services: Public records research, retrievals, filings and transaction support services
  • Ralph Rosenberg Court Reporters: Full service reporting firm. Member of the National Court Reporters Association. 
  • Various law firms for providing use of conference rooms for meetings

What schools are associated with your organization?

  • Kapiolani Community College - Legal Education Department
  • Heald College – Paralegal Program
  • California University of PA – sustaining member

What future projects is your organization working on and/or planning for?

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) aka Lou Gehrig’s Disease Walk. HPA has also provided monetary donations.
  • 2015 NFPA Convention in Honolulu
  • Student workshop and networking with paralegals in the field
