The Greater Lexington Paralegal Association (“GLPA”) was established in 1980. Some highlights of the GLPA include an annual scholarship offered to paralegal students, an annual PACE scholarship for a qualified member, socials for our members to mingle with other paralegals, free monthly CLE’s (10 times per year), encouraging education for paralegals, annual Donald E. Eppler Commitment Award and regular opportunities for community and pro bono service.
The GLPA’s anniversary is in July. Every year we have an annual luncheon held in July with a guest speaker and door prizes. The GLPA is in its 33rd year and works closely with Sullivan University, Eastern Kentucky University and Morehead State University to encourage student membership and involvement.
For fundraising we sell flowers (mums and various other offerings sometimes including poinsettias and bulbs), cookbooks (with recipes from our members)and logo items (totes, t-shirts). We have sponsors that include court reporters, Law Firms and Printing Companies. The GLPA has also just launched a Facebook page to keep members more involved.
Staying involved in the community is important to the GLPA. We assist a local bar association with a Pro Bono Clinic for uncontested divorces. We also encourage volunteer time through various other offerings yearly. The GLPA will be hosting the Kentucky Paralegal Association’s 2014 Annual Conference.
Being a member of the GLPA has great benefits. Our monthly CLE meetings include lunch and an interesting speaker. We offer an open house every January for paralegals to see what the GLPA is all about. We offer socials to our members, one of which was held at a local restaurant this Fall. In 2013 we attended a Legends (local baseball team) game which also included a meal for members and their families. Our December luncheon, which is attended by attorneys, paralegals and supporters, we recognize law firms, attorneys and others that support and contribute to our association.
