ARIZONA PARALEGAL IS 2001 PARALEGAL OF THE YEAR

Fawn K. Barnes, paralegal supervisor in the office of the Maricopa County Attorney in Phoenix, Arizona, has been selected as the 2001 Paralegal of the Year. LexisNexis Document Solutions sponsors the award annually to recognize a paralegal who has contributed to expansion of the paralegal profession.

Ms. Barnes came to the County Attorney's office in 1987 as its second paralegal and now supervises 85 paralegals who support 325 attorneys. Her essay described the ways she has promoted cost-effective continuing legal education for her staff, increased utilization of the paralegals, reduced expenses in the office, and participated in law-related activities in the Phoenix community. Among her accomplishments is an internship program that, in the 1999-2000 year alone, resulted in 14,000 volunteer hours to the County Attorney's office and on-the-job training for paralegal students in local programs.

LexisNexis Document Solutions (which acquired CorpAmerica, Inc. in Dover, Delaware last year) underwrote all expenses for Ms. Barnes to attend the NFPA spring convention in Washington, DC, where she was presented with a plaque as NFPA's Paralegal of the Year.
