Diane Soroko Gallo, the immigration paralegal for the law firm Long, Aldridge & Norman, LLP, an entrepreneurial first generation law firm in Atlanta, Georgia, has been named winner of the 1997 William R. Robie Leadership Award in recognition of her career-long efforts on behalf of the paralegal profession.

The presentation was made to Ms. Gallo on behalf of the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) by members of the NFPA Advisory Council, Denise Templeton, President of Templeton and Associates and George Kuhlman at NFPA's annual convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mr. Kuhlman praised NFPA for establishing the award to honor the memory of the late Chief Immigration Judge William R. Robie. Mr. Kuhlman reminded the assembled NFPA delegates of Judge Robie's commitment to delivering legal services "to those who were not positioned in society to obtain qualified help with their legal problems." The winner of the annual award must demonstrate commitment, leadership, and service to the paralegal profession of the quality that Judge Robie showed during his lifetime.

Ms. Templeton quoted from the nominating letter of the Georgia Association of Paralegals (GAP) explaining that Ms. Gallo has "vision for promoting and expanding the paralegal profession and diligence in making her or someone else's vision reality." The letter noted the winner's aptitude for building a consensus for success and how she frequently acknowledges the assistance and accomplishments of others. "Even while she is handling NFPA and employment responsibilities, she makes time to provide ongoing support for her local association and leaders and to participate in local activities," wrote Ms. Gallo's colleagues. "She spurred GAP to adopt a Code of Ethics before the NFPA membership adopted its Model Code of Ethics."
