NEWLY ELECTED NFPA BOARD TAKES ON CHALLENGES
The newly elected National Federation of Paralegal Associations, Inc. (NFPA) Board of Directors has taken on several challenges. First, they plan to strengthen the communication with bar and other legal associations. "Ensuring that every state and local bar association is aware of NFPA's mission and activities is one primary objective of our new board," said Lee Davis, the newly elected President.
A second goal is to further clarify and share NFPA's vision of expanding the roles of paralegals with all national legal organizations. A third goal is to continue to increase membership by 5%, as outlined in the organization's strategic plan. "We are looking at special marketing efforts to reach non-members", commented Davis. "There are thousands of paralegals who can benefit by becoming a NFPA member and we will continue in our efforts to reach them."
Davis, owner of Lee Davis and Associates of Phoenix, Arizona, was elected NFPA president at the recent convention in Washington, DC. Davis built her own business by surrounding herself with talented paralegals and strongly believes in the team effort of setting and accomplishing goals. Davis has previously served three terms as director of one of NFPA's five regions. She succeeds Sally Andress, RP, of Shaftsbury, Vermont, who will now serve as NFPA board advisor.
Elected to serve with Davis were Deborah Repass of Washington, DC, as vice president of profession development, and Lesley Cox, RP, of Noblesville, Indiana, as vice president of positions and issues. Continuing for another term in their 2000-2001 offices are secretary Patricia Lyons of Providence, Rhode Island; treasurer Jocelyn Acker, RP, of Indianapolis, Indiana; and membership director Carolyn Saenz of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Dianna Smiley of Citrus Heights, California, was elected to follow Davis as director from Region I, and Mary Creekmore of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, will represent Region IV. Continuing on the board for another term are Region II director Fay Wilson-Gorring of Green Bay, Wisconsin; Region III director Karen Belcher, RP, of Lebanon, Tennessee, and Region V director Kelly Reynolds, RP, of Rochester, New York.
In their campaign presentations, Davis, Repass, and Cox each declared a belief that the time has come for NFPA associations to consider taking a more proactive stance on matters involving regulation of their profession.
Headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, NFPA is a non-profit professional organization representing more than 17,000 paralegals in the United States and Canada. NFPA is the national voice and the standard for excellence for the paralegal profession through its work on the issues of regulation, ethics and education.
