HAWAII TO BE SITE OF 2000 SPRING NFPA CONVENTION

The Hawaii Paralegal Association (HPA) will say "Aloha" to delegates from mainland paralegal associations when the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) holds its first convention of the millennium at the Ala Moana Hotel.

The meeting will open on Thursday, May 4, with an exciting choice of professional seminars, many focusing on using electronics in today's legal workplace. Some of the topics include "Discovering Electronic Information," "Copyright Law in Cyberspace," and "The Process of Medical Consulting." An all-day PACE overview course will be offered. This will be of special interests to paralegals who intend to qualify for the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam based on their experience alone before the grandparenting period expires on December 31, 2000.

Friday, May 5, will open with the plenary session, region meetings and workshops, ending with a trip to the Polynesian Cultural Center for dinner. The policy meeting, at which delegates vote on matters concerning their profession's direction, will be conducted Saturday and Sunday. Members of the board of directors for 2000-2001 will be elected during the policy meeting. The 2000 winner of the Judge William Robie Leadership Award will be announced, and West Group will present scholarships to the two winning paralegal students for 2000.

Speakers for the three luncheon meetings will be Dr. Peter Alder of the Hawaii Justice Foundation, author and storyteller Glen Grant, and attorney Robert LeClair, chair of the legal education department at Kapiolani Community College.
