INDIANA PARALEGAL ASSOCIATION HOSTS 2002 SPRING CONVENTION

The Indiana Paralegal Association, host of the spring 2002 convention of the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA), invites paralegals nationwide to race to Indianapolis and participate in continuing legal education, discussion of issues facing the profession, and policy-making. The four-day event will open on Thursday, May 2, at the Indianapolis Marriott. For reservations at the convention rate of $92 single/double, call the hotel at (317) 352-1231 before March 1. The seminars and their presenters include:

• Advanced Legal Research and Writing by Kathryn L. Myers, immediate past president of the American Association for Paralegal Education;

• Using Medical Records to Win Your Case by Sherri Reed, a certified legal nurse consultant (LNC) who is a past president of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants;

• The ADA; The FMLA; The FLSA: Understanding How to Navigate Your Way Through "The Bermuda Triangle" of Employment Issues. Attorney Mark R. Waterfill and psychologist Michael Murphy will discuss how to handle aging baby boomers and avoid ADA claims.

• Putting Technology to Work for You will be presented by attorney John R. Maley, paralegal Roxanne Larrison, and computer software specialist Crystal K. Lockhart.

• Cleaning Up Environmental Contamination: Who Pays the Bill? will be presented by attorney Peter M. Racher and Jocelyn Acker, RP, a paralegal who is serving her third term as treasurer of NFPA.

• A Taxing Situation: 2002 Probate Tax Updates will be led by Charles F. Busse, supervisory attorney for the estate and gift tax group in the Indianapolis office of the Internal Revenue Service, and Jeanie Kirinich, a legal technician in that office.

• Paralegal Ethics will be discussed by David L. Morris, a senior deputy prosecutor with the child support division of the office of the prosecuting attorney of Marion County, Indiana.

Paralegals may attend workshops on membership maintenance and strategic long-range planning. They will divide into region meetings on Friday, followed by a social evening. The two-day policy meeting opens Saturday morning. Annual presentations of the Judge William R. Robie Leadership Award, two paralegal scholarships sponsored by West Group, and NFPA Paralegal of the Year Award, sponsored by CorpAmerica, are always a highlight of the spring convention. This convention will also see the presentation of three additional awards, two for pro bono, sponsored by The Affiliates, and the local leadership sponsored by DynCorp. These awards would have been given at the fall 2001 convention, canceled due to September 11.
